Next quarter's courses are always created four weeks before the end of the current quarter. For example, Winter quarter courses are created for everyone four weeks before the end of Fall quarter. The only exception to this is Fall quarter courses; these are created at the same time as Summer quarter courses, four weeks before the end of Spring quarter.

Students are always added to Canvas courses the Friday before the quarter begins.  This allows for time for early access, if an instructor wishes to open their class early.  Students will see their courses after the quarter begins or after the start day and time defined in the course, and after the course has been published.

There are two reasons this would be the case.

  1. The course is set to "read-only."  When this happens, the course will still appear to students, but they won't be able to submit to open assignments.  To remove access to your course, go to your course settings, then find the Participation section.  Find the checkbox labeled "Restrict students from viewing course after course end date."  Check that box and update settings to remove read-only access to the course.
  2. The course doesn't have and End date, or the date is set in the future.  To set an End date, go to your course settings, then find the Participation section.  Enter a date or change the date in the End field to one that has already passed.  Alternatively, set your course to use the Term start and end dates using the Participation dropdown menu.  Update settings.  Your course will close to students and all access will be cut off unless read-only access is granted or an extension is granted to specific students.

In order for students to view a course, two things need to happen:
  • The course must be published;
  • and the course start date needs to have passed.

If either of these has not occurred, students cannot see the course.  You can publish the course, but if the course start date (as set on the Course Settings screen) is to a time in the future, students won’t be able to access course materials until the course start time passes.

The course start date can be manually set by looking for the Participation section in your course settings, then changing the dropdown from Term to Course.  Set the start and end times and save your course settings.  Students will see your course when it begins on the start date.
