  • SEARCH FOR BOOKS ABOUT THE CASE:

search on case name in quotes

  • DO DIFFERENT, SEPARATE SEARCHES FOR BOOKS ABOUT THE CIVIL LIBERTY OR CONSTUTITIONAL ISSUE:

1. Add one civil liberty concept word in the first search box. If there are synonyms or related words to that concept you have the option to add them with an "OR" 2. "AND" focuses and narrows your search 3. To find a legal focus to your civil liberty, add this phrase exactly in the second search box: legal OR court OR constitutional OR "civil rights"

3. Filter in the left column by source type = BOOKS

Filter by source type equals books

4. If a result shows a location of a book, that means it is available on library shelves.  If the campus is closed, you can click on the book and follow directions to request it via curbside pickup:

5. If a result shows "view online" you can read the book online:

You can click on the title to find a description of the book. Click view online to read the book

6. Manipulate the online book
  • look at the author, publisher and list of references to help you determine if it is a scholarly book
  • find chapters that are most relevant to you
  • use the "search within" feature to find specific words in the book. Examples:
    • if the book is a general book about Supreme Court cases, type in the name of your case to see if the book covers your specific case
    • if the book is specifically about your case, type in an issue from that case ("religious freedom") or the name of a Supreme Court justice or "dissent" to find more detailed info about the case
  • Note that these features may look slightly different in different database platforms, but the strategy is the same:
