The art world has been making up for lost time in recent years, its overdue compensation crescendoing in the past six months, when more than a dozen exhibitions explicitly confronting climate change have been on view in cities from Santa Fe, N.M., to Singapore. "If sustainability or climate change become art trends du jour, we risk providing a palliative to ourselves and to our audiences without contributing much to artistic production, nuanced debate or lasting social change," she wrote in the catalog accompanying "Weather Report: Art and Climate Change," an early exhibition devoted to the topic organized by Lucy Lippard. [...]alongside the inevitably facile attempts - paintings of burning forests, icebergs melting away in urban squares, clumps of dead sea grass pinned to gallery walls, alarmist works that function as little more than propaganda-something else has emerged: a new, sometimes inadvertent form of protest art, one that avoids agitprop and in that way subverts ideas of what protest art should do and can be.

"Environmental Art" chapter in Art and Politics : A Small History of Art for Social Change Since 1945
Resource Wars and Resourceful Resistance: Gender Violence and Irreal Oil Environments in Two Global Novels by Women This essay examines two global novels by women, Buchi Emecheta's Destination Biafra (1982) and Betool Khedairi's Absent (2005)—featuring two peripheral sites in the world-system of oil, Nigeria and Iraq. I argue that these two novels may be read as accounts of oil's obscured resource wars by which colonized landscapes and lives are forcibly expropriated, especially by means of gender violence. In uses of realism blended with irrealist narrative, both novels also uncover missing stories of resourceful resistance and the emergence of revolutionary subjectivities organized around radical caregiving, sustainability, and environmental justice.
'What's the Story? Competing Narratives of Climate Change and Climate Justice' Climate change narratives in the United States have appeared in many genres: literary fiction and science fiction, literary nonfiction, children's environmental literature and film, environmental documentary films and science fiction films. Yet by shaping their narratives primarily with techno-science analyses and solutions, these narrative genres have not inclusively portrayed the additional facts of climate change--namely, the underpinnings of colonialism, neoliberalism, speciesism, and gendered fundamentalisms--and thus the activist and systemic solutions they present are partial an d ineffective. Moreover, mainstream U.S. ecocriticism has failed to notice the raced, classed, and gendered perspectives in these climate change narratives. A feminist environmental justice perspective can restore analysis of the additional features of climate change root causes and effects by expanding the genres and geographies of ecocritical analysis to include artists of color and of diverse sexualities, as well as by including the practices of animal food production and consumption that are exacerbating climate change. A feminist restor(y)ing of climate change narratives is one of ecocriticism's best strategies for confronting the root causes of climate change and suggesting solutions with real potential for enacting climate justice.
