TEDTalks: Kevin Slavin—How Algorithms Shape Our World

Kevin Slavin argues that we’re living in a world increasingly controlled by algorithms. In this riveting TEDTalk, Slavin shows how these complex computer programs determine espionage tactics, stock prices, and even the budget and rating for Hollywood movies. But what happens when these formulae go awry? Everything from an ordinary book on Amazon being priced at $2.7 million to the stock market Flash Crash of 2008. Slavin warns that we are writing code we can’t understand, with implications we can’t control.

Defeating the Hackers

This film explores the murky and fast-paced world of hackers out to steal money and identities and wreak havoc with people's online lives, and the scientists who are joining forces to help defeat them. Horizon meets the two men who uncovered the world's first cyber weapon, the pioneers of what is called ultra paranoid computing, and the computer expert who worked out how to hack into cash machines

The Hunt for AI

Mathematician Marcus du Sautoy is on a journey of discovery to find out just how close we are to creating machines that can think like human beings—and what it would mean if true artificial intelligence became a reality. In this program, the Oxford University professor attempts to communicate with robots that are developing their own private language, learns how a computer named Watson beat human contestants on the Jeopardy quiz show, and determines whether machines can be intuitive and creative.
