One of the most difficult steps in any research project is figuring out what words to use.
- It is challenging to articulate a developing topic
- It is challenging to find words that capture complex ideas
- And it is challenging to capture those ideas in clear words that work for research tools
Here are some strategies:
- Brainstorm ideas. Map them out visually.
- Move from narrow to broad. Example: from my swim coach to coaches
- As you research, keep an eye out for useful words on your topic. Write them down!
- Keep search terms simple and connect them with AND.
- Use Subject Terms provided by the databases.
For this assignment:
- Start with reference. Reference articles do more than fill in background information.
- They tell us what a topic is about and help us articulate our ideas.
- They also give us language we can use in other research tools.
- Use a database Topic Finder or Concept Map tool to find directions and language for your research.
- Your assignment asks you to consider key influences in your life - and to then step back and discuss your experience with the support of some credible outside sources. Use database Subject Terms or the Thesaurus to identify academic terminology.
- In class today, we will try a psychology database to look for relevant subject terms. You can go through the same steps in other subject databases.
