Report Example (Text Version, Amanda's answers in bold text)

APA Citation for Scholarly Article (1pt):  Arampatzi, E., Burger, M. J., & Novik, N. (2018). Social Network Sites, Individual Social Capital and Happiness. Journal of Happiness Studies19(1), 99–122. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10902-016-9808-z

Specific, Narrow Topic Investigated: (1pt): social media and happiness

Author + Organization: (1pt): Efstratia Arampatzi, Martin J. Burger, and Natallia Novik

Goal of Article? (What specifics are researchers trying to investigate or determine? (1pt): In this study, researchers were trying to investigate whether communication through social networking sites (SNS) was just as effective in supporting a person’s happiness as real-life social connections.

Focus: Summarize at least 8 specific facts, ideas, results, findings, or conclusions you learned (8 pts for content & expression): Through this study I learned about social capital, which is essentially the amount and depth of social interactions a person has with others around them. Previous studies referenced in the article show that the higher your social capital, the greater your happiness. However, many studies also show a decline in both in-person social interaction recently in Western countries, which has led to growing feelings of isolation and loneliness. Some scholars suggested active use of social networking sites (SNS) as a substitute for in-person interaction. The researchers in this study used a large survey of 1330 respondents and compared their answers related to happiness, social capital, and Internet use. After analyzing the survey responses, the researchers found that, overall, SNS use had no significant impact on a person’s happiness. So, in fact, it is not a good substitute for in-person interaction, which does have a significant positive impact on our happiness. Additionally, the researchers found that young people who experience depression or loneliness, may be negatively impacted by active SNS use – so, a person who is already not happy with their social contacts may feel even more isolated by using SNS.

Interesting Quotation- Cite correctly like in a paper, with quotation marks and in text-citation (1pt) Our study underlines the fact that it is pivotal to examine for which type of people and under which conditions SNS use is conducive or detrimental to happiness and other facets of subjective well-being.” (Arampatzi et al., 2018, p. 114)

Personal conclusion of the information (1pt): I found this research to be very interesting because it shows how complex the relationship between happiness and social media is. In particular, I think it’s interesting that someone who is experiencing loneliness may be negatively affected by using social media. Though we think that connecting with people online is just as good as meeting face-to-face, it seems like we should still put in an effort to connect with people synchronously.
