In Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Wives of the Dead," two young women are informed of their husbands' deaths. One, a soldier, has died in war. The other, a sailor, has died at sea. The two women comfort each other. Though they have very different tempers -- Mary is mild and quiet, Margaret is more passionate and lively -- they are the only company they can bear right now. Late that night, they finally are able to sleep when first Margaret and then Mary is awakened by knocks on the door. Visitors bring unexpected news. But how can you share the joy and relief of hearing your husband is still alive when your dear sister-in-law is still grieving for the loss of hers? Hawthorne's story of love and compassion is also something of a mystery: are the women sleeping and dreaming, or are they truly awake?

Sounder is the name of hunting dog that belongs to an African American sharecropper family. It's the 19th Century, deep in the American South, and racism rules the country. Poor and struggling to keep his family fed, the father of the family takes Sounder out hunting, but night after night they return with nothing to put on the table. Finally, one night, a ham appears on the family table. But before they can even finish eating the ham, deputies come to arrest the father for stealing. They shoot Sounder on their way out. In the end, both Sounder and the father survive, and return to the family. But being black in America has cost them dearly, and not all hurts are on the outside.

Snow Falling on Cedars by David GutersonCall Number: Basic Skills -- Reading -- Level 6 -- 813.5 G983s abridged 1999
ISBN: 058241928X
In 1954, in a small fishing village off the Pacific Northwest coast, Kabuo Miyamoto is accused of murder. Carle Heine is dead, and someone is responsible. Tension is still high in this town, leftover from World War II and the internment camps that destroyed the lives of so many Japanese-Americans. Kabuo's own family lost their strawberry farm when they were deported to the camps, and now that land belongs to Carl Heine who seems unwilling to sell the land back to Kabuo. Is that motive enough for murder? The story is told in a local newspaper, written by a white man, Ishmael, who once had loved and lost Kabuo's wife. Racial discrimination kept them apart then, and it seems likely to condemn Kabuo to prison now.
