ENGL 126 Research Writing: Humanities (Higgins)

Your Assignment

You will write a short (950-1150 word) interpretive literary argument in response to one of the items below. Your paper should include:

  • a clear interpretive claim which links a key literary element (or elements) & how it functions in this story to a larger interpretation of the story
  • extensive explication—that is, analysis of details in the story that help you to support & explain your interpretation
  • plenty of discussion of literary elements (like narration, POV, characterization, epiphany, etc.) that help readers understand how those elements contribute to your interpretation
  • integration of experts’ ideas that demonstrates your ability to use experts’ contributions to extend, complicate & deepen your own interpretation

You are required to use at least two sources of literary criticism from Holman Library. That includes articles from databases, books or chapters from books in our library, etc.Consider using:

  • One “overview” style article from Gale Literary Sources as a critical introduction to your story and author. Topic Overviews (and similar academic sources) are written for students and they provide an insightful introduction to an author's work, themes addressed, literary elements, literary significance, and critical approaches. Topic Overviews are a good place to get ideas for your own analysis. discuss key themes nce articles
  • One lengthier and more sophisticated article from Gale Literary Sources or another database (JStor, Academic Search Complete, Proquest). JSTOR, Academic Search Complete and ProQuest are multidisciplinar databases and they include articles written for the general public along with scholarly articles. To find a sophisticated reading, try limiting your search to Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals.
  • You may also use an article or chapter that helps you to explain the historical or social context for the story, but that article would be considered an extra article.

Lahiri "Interpreter of Maladies"
