This library research guide supports AI workshops taught in Holman Library.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

This is when machines or computers are designed to do tasks that would normally require human intelligence, like recognizing pictures, understanding speech, or making decisions.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI)

This is a type of AI that creates things instead of just analyzing or classifying things. For example, it can generate text, images, music, or even code based on what it's been trained on.

Large Language Models (LLMs)

These are a specific kind of generative AI that are really good at understanding and generating text. They're trained on huge amounts of information (like books, websites, and more) so they can answer questions, write stories, or help with other text-related tasks.

So, in short:

  • AI is smart machines.
  • Generative AI makes new things.
  • Large language models are AI that specialize in understanding prompts (inputs) and creating new content (outputs).
