HLED 150 Total Wellness: Prepare to Research!

Video Reflection

Scholarly Article Introduction

After doing the "Video Reflection" activity, you need to compare a health science article from two different sources:

  • a popular magazine (a magazine that the general public reads, such as TIME or Health magazine) and
  • a scholarly journal (an academic magazine where researchers and professors publish studies or analyze research)

You have three combination options to choose from. Please see the options below.

For each option, please:

  • Open and skim both the popular magazine article and the scholarly journal article (the first article is always the popular magazine)
  • Notice the similarities and differences between the two articles
  • Write down your observations in your class handout

Option 1: about happiness and social media

Option 2: about happiness, social media, and nature

Option 3: about happiness and Twitter posts

Answers for the matching activity:
  • A citation is information about the article such as the name, journal title, author(s), and publication date.
  • An abstract is the summary of the article.
  • The introduction or literature review section discusses previous studies and findings on this topic.
  • The methods section describes how the experiment was designed.
  • The results section lists the results and raw data from the experiment (there is little or no analysis here).
  • The discussion section analyzes the results of the study. It talks about what the study found or proved.
  • The conclusion talks about how the study impacts the larger field and how it could be applied in the real-world practice.
  • The references section lists previous articles and studies that the authors read to help them with this current study.
  • Plagiarism is the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own (often done with cut and paste).
