Read introductory articles on immigration, refugees, migration, and world crises in subject encyclopedias. 

These can be a good source of information, including:

  • Who, What, When, Where, Why, How basics
  • Terminology and Concepts
  • Laws and History
  • Leads to other sources

Find News Journalism

News journalism offers reporting and analysis on current global immigration issues. Start with reliable news sources from Holman Library databases.

  • Limit your search to newspaper and magazine articles. 
  • You can set a date limit.
  • If you find too many short, insubstantial articles, try limiting at "document type" to cover story or feature.

Find News Online

A Web search will return news articles on issues and events from around the world, including immigration, migration, displaced persons and refugees. 

Important: Be sure to assess how reliable the information source is! For example, RT News is Russian propaganda.

  • Look for an About Us link to learn more about the politics, mission and scope of each source. 
  • Look the source up in Wikipedia! You can learn about its politics, reliability, backing, etc.
  • Read editorials for a sense of the political leaning of a news source.
  • See if they quote sources - and if those sources are credible.
  • Validate news in other sources. We call that Lateral Reading. Fact check claims in other sources.

Search for news, documentary and educational videos on global immigration and refugee issues in the Holman Library database Films on Demand.

One Search

Search for DVDs and streaming video in Holman Library's collection.

  • Type in relevant keywords. Use limiters to find videos.

You are not limited to the resources on this list. Do a web search for additional organizations working on global migration and refugee issues. 

  • Remember to assess any source you consider using.
  • Look up the organization to learn more about its mission, vision, politics, actions, funders, etc. You can also look at the organization's own About Us or Mission page to learn how the organization represents itself. Determine if this is a Credible and Reliable source.

Search the Web for governmental websites of nations around the world. 

  • Look for commissions and office on immigration, migration and/or refugees
  • Use the search feature to look within the website for specific information
