Find Scholarly Articles from Criminal Justice Journals

For this assignment, you need to select scholarly peer-reviewed articles from Criminal Justice journals. If you're not sure if it's a criminal justice journal, try googling the title and look for an about us or other info about the journal's focus.

Start with the Holman Library One Search.
  • Holman Library's One Search searches for articles, books, and more in all our library databases at once.
  • To limit to SCHOLARSHIP ONLY, limit to PEER REVIEWED only from the menu on the left after your initial search. 
  • Select current enough articles & articles that focus on the United States. You can set a date limit from the menu on the left.

Find an article abstract with no full text at Holman Library? Don't worry! You can try to borrow it for free from another library using the InterLibrary Loan link below.

Search Example 1: One Search

Images below show a search of two key ideas: "ineffective assistance of counsel" AND race OR racism.

  • When I search for just "ineffective assistance of counsel" and limit to peer reviewed only, I find 577 articles. 
  • When I narrow my search by focusing in on race OR racism AND "ineffective assistance of counsel", I find 184 peer reviewed articles.
  • I can click on the title of an article to find the abstract, a summary that tells me what the article will discuss and helps me decide if it looks relevant and useful!

Search Example 2: Academic Search Complete

In the image below I: 

  • Type in multiple relevant keywords, building and narrowing my search as I go. 
  • I truncate polic* to search for either polic or policing.
  • I use AND to narrow and focus my search.
  • I limited to scholarly peer reviewed journals only.
  • I can set a date limit from the menu on the left.
  • I can click on the title of an article to find the abstract, a summary that tells me what the article will discuss and helps me decide if it looks relevant and useful!

 

 

Find key Criminal Justice journals in print in Holman Library.

To find full text articles:

Step 1: Search the journal index on its online website

Step 2: Write down the volume, issue and year of the journal you want, along with the article title.

Step 3: Walk to the magazine and periodicals shelves in the library and locate the issue and full-text article you want.

  • You may read journals in the library, or photocopy or scan an article to take home.

You can find some good scholarly criminal justice articles for this assignment in free legal archives online, but be aware that much of the content is not peer reviewed and some of it is not scholarly.

The burden of proof rests on you to determine if the article is scholarly.
