Non-Academic Student Support – 4 Mechanisms Encouraging Positive Student Outcomes
A review of the literature on non-academic support yields evidence of four mechanisms by which such supports can improve student outcomes: (1) creating social relationships, (2) clarifying aspirations and enhancing commitment, (3) developing college know-how, and (4) addressing conflicting demands of work, family and college. Identifying these mechanisms allows for a deeper understanding of promising interventions and the conditions that may lead students to become integrated into college life.
Review of College Success classes in 3 Virginia Community Colleges
The authors posit that College 101 courses could led to positive long-term outcomes if they include pedagogies that emphasize applied learning, contextualization, reflection, and deliberate practice.
Do Student Success Courses actually improve student success?
Researchers used statistical models to see if student success courses still appear to be related to positive outcomes even after controlling for student characteristics and other factors that might also influence the relative success of students who take such courses.
