Using this Guide

Welcome to the News Literacy guide!

You'll find a number of resources here to support teaching and learning about news literacy and fake news in a digital age. These resources include lesson plans, source evaluation techniques, documents, organizations, videos, and real-world examples to help you understand, analyze, and interact with the current news landscape.

Each resource is sorted into one of the following categories:

  • Facts, Figures, & Fake News: Find data about news literacy and news consumption in the U.S., as well as background and analysis of the term "fake news."

  • News Literacy 101: Learn the basics of how reporters and editors gather information, verify stories, and publish their findings. Also consider the value of a free press and tips for identifying reliable news sources.
  • Fact Checking & Unreliable Sources: Discover resources for teaching students how to fact check stories, examples of fake or misleading news stories, and tips for spotting unreliable sources.
  • Bias & Filter Bubbles: Consider how to spot bias in the news, how reporters manage their biases, how our own biases influence how we select information, and search engine bias.

  • Using the VIA Method: Get tips for vetting news sources to make sure they are Verifiable, Independent, and Accountable. Find examples and case studies to illustrate each element.
